If you are planning to come to Japan, if you have a "student" visa and are planning to work, if you are already in Japan and want to change jobs or if you are planning to get married to a Japanese person, you need to apply for a residence status. Visa application procedures differ depending on the purpose. In general, foreigners who wish to stay in Japan are required to appear in person at the local Immigration Bureau.
